The vote was 92-5 for Wray, a former high-ranking official in George W. Bush’s justice department who oversaw investigations into corporate fraud.

Mr. Wray graduated in 1989 from Yale University and earned his law degree in 1992 from Yale Law School.

He was a federal prosecutor in the US attorney’s office for the northern district of Georgia from May 1997 to May 2001.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley praised Wray for having "the skill, the character and the unwavering commitment to impartial enforcement of the law" needed in an FBI Director.

"He has shown that he has the expertise needed to address the wide range of policy issues currently facing the FBI," the Iowa Republican said from the Senate floor.

President Donald Trump nominated Wray for the post in June, several weeks after he fired former Director James Comey. At the time, Mr Trump said that Wray was “a man of impeccable credentials.”/.
