7.2 magnitude earthquake hits Fiji

An earthquake registering 7.2 on the Richter scale struck 284 kilometres off the coast of Fiji at 10.52 am local time on January 3rd, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The National Weather service Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the quake occurred south of Fiji.

The Fiji Electricity Authority reported that about half of Fiji's largest island, including the capital, was currently experiencing a power outage.

A tsunami warning was issued for parts of the Pacific following the earthquake. So far, there have been no reports of damage or injury./.
