With all ballots counted, President Sauli Niinisto had 62.7 percent of the vote, while his leading rival, Pekka Haavisto of the Greens, had 12.4 percent.

"I am surprised and touched by this big support," Mr. Niinisto told reporters in Helsinki.

Finland's most popular President in more than three decades, the 70-year-old politician's overwhelming win avoided the need for a second round of voting, a first since Finland introduced two-round presidential elections by popular vote in 1994.

Mr. Niinisto will serve his second term until 2024. He is the 12th head of state since Finland achieved independence from Russia in 1917./.
