"The election of the Supreme Leader as Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK is a great political event of crucial historical significance," said the government in a statement.

Leader Kim Jong-un was elected at the opening day of the first session of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) of the DPRK, held at the Mansudae Assembly Hall on Thursday, April 11th, according to the KCNA's report.

Mr. Kim was first elected to the post in June 2016, when the commission was created through an amendment to the constitution. Though it has been only three years since the election, his new five-year term should technically start with the beginning of the newly formed parliament.

Besides, Choe Ryong Hae was named President of the Presidium of the SPA of the DPRK, replacing Kim Yong Nam.

Kim Jae Ryong, chief secretary of the Jagang provincial committee of the DPRK's ruling party, was chosen as Premier of the cabinet, who will play a major role in rebuilding the economy./.
