According to Mr. Antonio Guterres, the irreversible closure of the site will be an important confidence-building measure that will configure to further efforts towards sustainable peace and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Earlier, the DPRK’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on May 12th that the country’s only known nuclear test site, Punggye-ri, would be dismantled between May 23rd and May 25th, depending on the weather conditions.

Journalist from China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea will be invited to witness the dismantling process.

US President Donald Trump said the plan by the DPRK to dismantle the nuclear test site ahead of the big summit between the DPRK and the US, which is to negotiate the denuclearization and normalization of the relationship between the two countries, set in Singapore on June 12th, is “a very smart and gracious gesture”./.
