UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on strong nations’ relationship

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on January 16th said the relationship between the United States, China and Russia is "vitally important".

Addressing the press conference at the UN headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that it is imperative that the United States and Russia, Russia and China and other big powers have "vital relationships".

At the event, Mr. Guterres also spoke to the Member States about the year ahead. He said: “Last year, on my first day as Secretary-General, I issued an appeal for peace and called for a surge in diplomacy to end the crises that were causing so much suffering. On the first day of this year, I issued a red alert.”

“At the beginning of 2018, we must recognize the many ways in which the international community is falling short. It is my duty as Secretary-General to tell the Member States where this is happening and to suggest ways out of our predicament,” he added. He also highlighted climate change, inequality and nationalism as his concerns.

The Secretary-General also listed 12 priorities for 2018, including globalization that benefits all, fight against climate change and terrorism, migration, and de-nuclearization. He highlighted one cross-cutting imperative: the empowerment of women./.
