The two officials held talks over the telephone for the first time since Ms. Kang became RoK’s first female Foreign Minister.

Ms. Kang and her Japanese Foreign Minister spoke over the phone, and the Japanese top diplomat congratulated her on her inauguration earlier this week, according to the official. Their phone call lasted for around 20 minutes.

The RoK side quoted Ms. Kang as telling Mr. Kishida, "Japan is a close neighboring country with which (RoK) shares fundamental values and strategic interests."

As for regional security, Mr. Kishida said he confirmed with Ms. Kang that Tokyo and Seoul will strengthen pressure on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to abandon its development of nuclear weapons./.
