Love market in Quang Ninh province’s highland region

On April 4th of the lunar calendar, ethnic minorities in the highland district of Binh Lieu in the northern province of Quang Ninh flock to Dong Van love market which is organised only once in a year.

Love market is a specific cultural characteristic of the Dao ethnic minorities in Dong Van commune.

 

 A ceremony recognising a man’s adulthood is an important ritual of a Dao ethnic minority man.

 

On that day, people put work behind their them to join in the entertainment, cultural activities and art performances. Part of the event includes a competition on making sticky rice cakes among ethnic minority groups.

 The love market is a space for spouses to meet their ex-lovers.

 

According to Dao ethnic minority people’s conception, on that day, both men and women are allowed to do everything they want, even getting drunk.

 

Many traditional products by ethnic minorities are sold at the love market.

 Woolen used to make clothes for Dao ethnic minority women.

 

 Apart from Dao ethnic minorities, the love market also attracts
Kinh, Tay and San Chi people.
