Japanese market prefers Vietnamese tuna

Japan is the only country among the traditional tuna import markets of Vietnam to have growth in January 2020.

In particular, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam’s tuna export value to Japan increased by nearly 20% over the same period in 2019.

Besides Japan, Peru is also very fond of Vietnam’s tuna. Tuna exports to Peru saw an impressive growth rate of 279% in January. Some other outstanding markets, including Russia, Algeria and Ukraine, reported growth rates at 3 digits compared to the same period in 2019.

However, Vietnam’s tuna export situation is not very satisfactory. Tuna export value of Vietnam in January 2020 reached nearly USD40 million, a year-on-year reduction of 31%.

This year, the tuna export scale is narrowed with 55 markets, against 65 in 2019. Meanwhile, tuna export turnover to traditional markets such as the US, EU, ASEAN and China decreased./.
