The above information has just been announced by the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA). In which, India accounted for 63% of the export market share of star anise, the remaining 37% was exported to China, the US and other markets.
Exporters said that in the first 5 months of the year, India and China massively bought this spice from Vietnam with triple-digit growth. In addition to the two markets above, the US and the Netherlands are also increasing their purchases of Vietnamese star anise. It is expected that by the end of the year, the export of this spice can reach over USD100 million.
According to data from the General Department of Forestry, for cinnamon and anise products, the export value continuously increased, reaching more than USD245 million in 2020 and about USD274 million in 2021, accounting for more than 8.3% of fruit and vegetable export turnover. It is expected that this year, the export value of cinnamon and star anise will reach about USD276 million.
The World Spice Association assessed that Vietnam possesses many precious spices, one of which is star anise. This type is often used as a seasoning in dishes such as pho, curries, beef noodles and stews, to help create flavor and aroma for dishes. In Vietnam, anise growing area is about 40,000 hectares, mainly in Lang Son and Cao Bang, with an annual output of more than 16,000 tons. This species of plant is grown by few countries, most in Vietnam and China. The price of dried star anise in Vietnam is fluctuating from VND180,000-290,000 per kilogram, depending on the quality.
The world market for spices and flavorings was valued at USD21.3 billion in 2021 and will grow to USD27.4 billion in 2026.
