Murphy, 38, whose Vietnamese name is Dang Thi Ngoc Dung, won Florida’s 7th Congressional District in the election on November 8th, beating 23-year incumbent John Mica.

She worked for the Defence Department for four years as a security expert following the September 11th incident.

Stephanie Murphy was among those who were invited to deliver a speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, last July.

She promised to “work with both Democrats and Republicans” and “always put people over politics”.

"It has been my honour to serve the district, state, and nation and I’m proud of my accomplishments both in Florida and in leadership positions in Congress," Murphy said in a statement.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you Florida for the faith you have placed in me. I'm incredibly honoured, and I will make you proud,” Murphy tweeted./.
