Ho Chi Minh City: Nearly 40,000 children are safely vaccinated against COVID-19

Within two days of organizing vaccination against COVID-19 for children aged 12-17, 39,756 children were vaccinated with no serious side effects having been recorded, Ms Nguyen Thi Huynh Mai, Head of Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, said on October 28.

According to Ms Mai, the vaccination against COVID-19 for children aged 12-17 was carried out with the consent of the Ministry of Health and the guidance of the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City.

Accordingly, on October 27, Ho Chi Minh City started injecting children in Cu Chi District at 10 injection tables, and 4 injection tables in District 1. On October 28, 21 districts and Thu Duc City organized vaccination against COVID-19 for children. Particularly, Go Vap District has deployed vaccination for children since October 29.

"The injection sites are organized for medical safety and pandemic prevention. The city has not recorded any cases of severe side effects after injection, only a few cases have mild side effects and have been promptly treated," Ms. Mai added.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health also added that, according to Plan 3522 of the Ho Chi Minh City Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, the vaccination for children is carried out according to age, starting from 16 to 17 years old, then gradually younger until all children in the age group are vaccinated. According to statistics from the education sector, 780,000 children will be vaccinated against COVID-19. “The Department of Health has estimated a sufficient number of vaccines to vaccinate children,” said Ms Mai.

Statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control said that the city's hospitals are currently treating 10,988 patients, including 751 children under 16 years old, 257 critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation and 11 patients with ECMO intervention./.
