Some 8.5 million foreigners visit Vietnam in six months

(CPV) – Vietnam continues to be an attractive destination to foreigners as the country attracted nearly 8.5 million foreign tourists in the first half of 2019, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The number of foreign visitors continuously reaches more than 1 million a month from the beginning of the year.

In the six months, travelers from Asia made up 77.4% of the total, a year-on-year rise of 8.2%. Of this, major markets sending travelers to Vietnam saw growth: Taiwan-China (27%), the Republic of Korea (21.3%), and Japan (12.8%).

Tourists from Europe increased 5.5% from the same period last year with growth seen in most markets, except Finland (down 10.1%); including Russia (6%), the UK (4.4%), France (1.2%) and Germany (6.2%).

In 2019, the Vietnam tourism industry set target of welcoming 18 million foreign tourists and serving 85 domestic visitors.

Under the Politburo Resolution 08 on developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector, the tourism industry looks to attract 17-20 million foreign visitors and cater for 82 million local tourists, contribute over 10% of GDP./.
