According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in August 2021, the country’s seafood exports reached 224.8 million USD, down 22% compared to the previous month and down 24% compared to the same month last year.

The sharp decrease in seafood export came from production activities being delayed due to social distancing to prevent the COVID-19 epidemic, processing plants reducing capacity, lack of production materials, supply chain interruptions, and transportation being not smooth.

This month, export value of all seafood products (except bivalve molluscs) plummeted by double digits from 19-48% compared to August 2020. Other mollusc exports dropped the most by 48%, while marine fish and crab exports fell by 30% and 25%, respectively. Only exports of bivalve molluscs rose by 36%.

However, thanks to positive growth in the previous months, the total value of seafood exports in the 8 months still increased by 7% year on year. Specifically, exports of bivalve molluscs increased the most, by 40% to 86.8 million USD, while exports of other marine fish, tuna and squid increased by 5%, 13% and 4% respectively.

The 5 largest import markets of Vietnam’s squid and octopus include the Republic of Korea (accounting for 41%), CPTPP (24%), the EU (11%), Thailand (11%) and China (7%)./.
