As planned, by 2030, the province will have 14 thermoelectric plants in Uong Bi, Cam Pha and Ha Long Cities, Dong Trieu and Hai Ha districts. So far, 6 plants have been completed and put into operation, VietnamNet reported.

The Quang Ninh thermoelectric plant No. 1 in Ha Long city was officially connected to the national grid in March 2010 with a capacity of 600 MW, while the Quang Ninh thermo-electric plant No. 1 is being constructed, also with a capacity of 600 MW.

In Cam Pha city, two plants with a capacity of 600 MW each, invested by Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin), have generated power for the national grid.

This April, the Mao Khe thermoelectric plant with a capacity of 440 MW was also been completed in Dong Trieu district with the use of environment friendly devices and technologies.

One of the largest thermoelectric projects of Quang Ninh is the Mong Duong thermoelectric plant No. 2. Invested with a capital of nearly USD2 billion with a capacity of 1,200 MW, it is expected to be operational by mid 2015, providing over 6.5 billion kWh per year.

Besides, the construction of the Thang Long thermoelectric plant with a capacity of 600 MW has been inaugurated in Hoanh Bo district. The first phase of the project is expected to be put into use by 2017.

Therefore, Quang Ninh has become the largest thermoelectric centre in the north in generating power with coal. When all the ongoing thermoelectric plants are put into use, it will become the largest thermoelectric centre of the country, with an expected power generation capacity of 5,150MW by 2015.

To target a sustainably developed economy, Quang Ninh is striving to not depend on coal in generating power by 2015. Accordingly, thermoelectric plants have been planned to be situated in the further distance with the use of environmental friendly technologies./.
