Accordingly, from June 3-7, nearly 100 tons of lychees were exported to Japan, Australia, the UK and EU markets. In Japan alone, in just 3 days from June 4-7, nearly 40 tons of lychees were successfully exported.

Leaders of the Bac Giang Provincial Department of Industry and Trade said that on June 15, 3 tons of Bac Giang lychees will be exported to the Australian market for the first time.

It is forecasted that the amount of lychee exported to high-value markets will be higher than previous years, contributing to the overall success of this year's lychee crop.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association, said Vietnamese lychees exported to world markets such as the US and EU often face strong competition with Chinese lychees. In order for Vietnamese lychees to be competitive when exporting to Australia, the Association has proposed that Methyl Bromide technology can be applied instead of having to bring lychees to Ho Chi Minh City for irradiation, helping shorten the shipping time to the Australian market.

With over 331 million people of great consumption power, the US market still has a lot of room for Vietnamese fruit to expand and develop, and is a huge fruit consumption market. The main current customer group is the Asian population and especially the growing Vietnamese community, concentrated in major cities and towns of the US.

To meet the increasing demand, the US imports lychees from China, Vietnam, India, and Thailand, of which Luc Ngan and Bac Giang lychees are always well received by US consumers and appreciated for their quality.

The US and Australia are two markets that require lychees to be treated by irradiation. For the Australian market, there are many advantages when the irradiation and packaging of fabrics is done right at the Hanoi Irradiation Center.

The US market only accepts 2 facilities, in Ho Chi Minh City and Long An, as eligible for irradiation and packaging. To export lychees to the US, for many years, businesses have had to transport lychees from Bac Giang and Hai Duong to the southern region, so it is costly and time consuming, while lychee has a short crop.

Leaders of the Plant Protection Department said that they are actively working with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) so that the Hanoi Irradiation Center is recognized as eligible to irradiate lychees for export to this market.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, General Director of Vina T&T Import-Export Company, said that if the Hanoi Irradiation Center is recognized as qualified, it will open up great opportunities in exporting lychees to the US market./.
