Of which, in May, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports earned USD 466 million, up 80.6% from the same period last year.
According to the Vietnam Fruit Vegetables Association (VinaFruit), among the top 10 fruit and vegetable export markets, China, the US, the Netherlands and Malaysia saw the strongest growth. Particularly, China's purchase of vegetables and fruits from Vietnam reached USD805 million, accounting for 59% of the market share.
In terms of commodities, by the end of April 2023, the export value of dragon fruit and durian was equivalent to about 23% of the total export turnover of the whole fruit and vegetable industry. However, at present, dragon fruit exports are slowing down due to China's harvest season and low consumption.
According to export businesses, in the first months of the year, despite competing with products from Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines, Vietnam's fruit export turnover still broke through. As at Vina T&T Import-Export Company, while the turnover to the US and Canadian markets decreased, China was the support market to help export activities grow 20% in sales in the first 4 months of 2023.
Export prospects in the second half of the year will be brighter when Vietnamese agricultural products are being favored by many countries. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Vinafruit Secretary- General, said that the forecast for fruit and vegetable exports in the coming months will continue to be positive when the country enters the fruit season, especially the blooming lychee in June and July. Besides, durian has the opportunity to rise to become a billion-dollar item as more planting areas are granted export codes for China. It is forecasted that this year, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports can reach the milestone of USD4 billion./.
