Ministry of Health condemns doctor suspended for hiding patient’s body

On October 23, the Ministry of Health said that Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen presided over a meeting on the case of a death at Cat Tuong Cosmetic Surgery Centre at 45 Giai Phong street, Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi.

According to initial information Mrs. Le Thi Thanh Huyen, who lived at 36 Hang Thiec street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi, died at Cat Tuong Cosmetic Surgery Centre. Doctor Nguyen Manh Tuong from the surgical ward under Bach Mai hospital was in charge of the surgery.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen said that the leader of the Ministry of Health felt deep grief over the matter and shared loss with patient Huyen’s family. The Ministry condemned the unacceptable action of doctor Nguyen Manh Tuong and offered to cooperate with agencies investigating the case.

The Ministry of Health asked the Department of Health Check-up and Treatment Management to coordinate with Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi city Department of Health and local authorities to visit and offer condolances to Mrs. Huyen’s family; and ordered People’s Committees across the country to tighten inspections of cosmetic surgery centres.

Doctor Tuong, who allegedly threw his patient's body into the Red River after a botched breast operation, was suspended from duty at Bach Mai Hospital, following his arrest on October 22./.
