Star apples found way to penetrate into the US market

So far, the US has allowed imports of five fruits from Vietnam, namely dragon fruit, rambutan, lychee, longan and star apple. It has been considering allowing imports of Vietnamese fresh mangoes.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the decision was made after APHIS finalized analysis on risks related to the imports of fresh star apples from Vietnam into the American continent.

Accordingly, APHIS said that the fruit from Vietnam is safe to be imported into the market, and it just needs to apply some plant hygiene standards to reduce the risk of pests, the spread of pests or epidemic associated with the imports of fresh star apple from Vietnam. 

Currently, Vietnam’s fresh star apples are in harvest, thus, domestic traders should prepare necessary conditions for the fruit to be irradiated in Vietnam and each fruit must be packed in nylon bags before exporting to the market.

In addition, fresh star apples from Vietnam must be imported in commercial consignments only and each consignment must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate issued by the NPPO of Vietnam and treated in accordance with Title 7 Part 305 of the US Code of Federal Regulations.

Each consignment is also subject to inspection upon arrival in the US./.
