(CPV) - As many as 1,000 elite junior chess players are heading to the city of Da Lat in the central highland province of Lam Dong on July 5th for the 2017 National Junior Chess Championship.

Running through July 17th, it is the most prestigious chess tournament for junior players aged six to 20 who come from 37 localities. Dong Nai province alone contributes 16 players.

According to the Vietnam Chess Federation, for each age-group, athletes should play in a round-robin format (less than 10 players), 7-game Swiss-system basic (for 11-25 players), and 9-game Swiss-system basic (from 26 players).

Competitors will play in the events of standard, rapid and blitz./.

Swiss-system tournament is a common type of tournament in which players or teams are paired to face each other for several rounds of competition.

It was first used in a chess tournament in Zurich in 1895, which is how it earned its name.

Accordingly, players are never eliminated. Instead, players are paired in every round - the number of rounds is predetermined - and the winner is the player who earns the most points by the end of the tournament. They typically earn a single point for a win and a half-point for a draw, though other scoring systems are possible. In every round, each player is paired against an opponent who has the same - or a similar - number of points in the tournament.
