Vietnam wins historic gold medal at world level karate

(CPV) - Nguyen Thi Ngoan on September 10th won an historic gold medal for Vietnam in the women’s 61kg event (kumite) in Germany’s Halle/Leipzig for the Karate1-Premier League.

She qualified automatically for the first round of the category, among 98 competitors. Later, the Son Tay town-origin competitor consecutively trounced Kandemir Zehra (Turkey) 1-0, Kornfeld Noemie (Switzerland) 2-0, Orbon Joane (US) 3-0, and Heurtault Leila (France) 1-0, to enter the semi-final event with defending world champion Buchinger Alisa from Australia. Surprisingly, 2-0 was the final result in advanced, paving the way for Vietnamese athlete to fight against Canada’s Jumaa Haya in the last game.

Referees agreed to declare Nguyen Thi Ngoan as the winner even she was led by 1-3, when Ngoan’s rival recorded four fouls of the total.

Mr Vu Son Ha, head of Karate unit under the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, happily shared that this achievement was a milestone for Vietnam’s karate history, as the nation had never ever bagged such a gold in any tour of the K1 system so far.

In another movement, Ngoan’s team-mates Bui Thi Ngoc Han (55kg) and Nguyen Thi Phuong (individual kata) lost their race./.
