Speaking at the event, Standing Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodian Motherland Nhem Valy said that after the victory in 1979, Cambodia was liberated and provinces across the country built Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monuments.

Cambodia’s escape from the genocidal Pol Pot regime was thanks to Vietnamese volunteers and soldiers and Cambodian people are always grateful to the Vietnamese people for their sacrifice for Cambodia.

Colonel Nguyen Thanh Chinh, Vietnamese Military Attaché in the Kingdom of Cambodia, appreciated the good cooperation between the army and people of the two countries; thanked the Cambodian leaders at all levels and local people for their wholehearted support for the construction of the Friendship Monument.

The monument was rebuilt at the base of the old monument, which was first constructed in the centre of Kampong Speu in the 1980s.

This is the 20th out of 22 monuments rebuilt or upgraded across Cambodia in recognition of the great contributions of Vietnamese and Cambodian soldiers who sacrificed their lives to liberate Cambodia from the genocidal Pol Pot regime.

The construction is scheduled for completion in 12 months./.
