Built in area of approximately 7,500 square metres, the monument is the 23rd friendship monument to be built in Cambodia, which indicates the historical significance of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers’ assistance to the neighbouring country in its fight against the genocidal Pol Pot regime.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Standing Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the National Council of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodian Motherland Nhem Valy and Vietnamese Military Attaché in Cambodia Col. Nguyen Thanh Chinh.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Nhem Valy recalled the struggle of the army and people of Cambodia who were given support by Vietnamese volunteer soldiers to overthrow the genocidal Pol Pot regime and revive Cambodia.

He emphasized that the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monuments built in many localities throughout Cambodia aim to remember the services of both nations' heroic martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of Cambodia’s liberation.

The USD1.4-million construction of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument in Svay Rieng province is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.

In addition, five other friendship monuments will also be built in 2022 in the provinces of Siem Riep, Odor Meanchey, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Speu, and Pailin of Cambodia./.
