Currently, Con Dao Airport can only operate small aircraft while the high demand for tourists to Con Dao makes customers have to wait to buy tickets.

The Ministry of Transport has approved an adjusted zoning plan to upgrade the Con Dao Airport in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province by 2030.

Being a domestic airport, Con Dao Airport, which is located in the island district of the same name, serves both civil and military flights. It will be upgraded to meet the 4C standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Its runway is 1,830 meters long and 30 meters wide, receiving ATR 72 and other small aircraft. Once it is upgraded, the existing 1,830-meter-long runway's width will be increased from 30 to 45 meters to receive large jets such as A320, A321 and equivalent aircraft.

The new airport passenger terminal is planned southeast of the existing terminal, with 2 elevations, meeting the operating capacity of 2 million passengers per year; with reserve land fund to expand to the East when needed.

As planned, the cargo terminal to the west of the passenger terminal covers about 4,315m2, built when needed.

The Ministry of Transport also plans to build an intersection between the urban road and the trunk road to the airport. Specifically, the trunk road will include a 4-lane main road connecting the trunk road of Co Ong urban area to the airport area.

The total planned land demand is more than 181 hectares, including more than 104 hectares of the existing airport land area and the additional land area of approximately 77 hectares. Of which, the civil aviation land area is more than 52.5 hectares, the military land area is more than 9.3 hectares and the common land area is more than 119 hectares./.
